External CD player not working on Pi4 but is on Zero 2W

I’ve just signed up for the premium and have been wanting to try out adding an external CD drive to play and rip some CDs.

I tried it on a portal Pi Zero 2 setup I have at work and it works ok, it can play a CD with no problem, but it’s not getting the Meta Data or able to rip the CD.

Bigger issue is when I tried at home on my Pi4 setup as soon as I put the CD drive into the USB port, the unit seems to lose it’s wireless connection (when I reboot, the wireless connection is no longer working either).

Please connect the rpi to a copper network and test again. If it errors out again post a log.

Hi all, just an update.

After a bit of trial and error, I found that it would work with an externally powered hub.

What amazed me was that it works with a Pi Zero 2W but not with Pi4b.

The zero 2W is in an Argon POD case with POD HDMI/USB adapter and after checking it appears that the USB ports on the adapter are directly connected to the power supply in some way.

Still surprised that the Pi 4s USB ports can’t put out enough power. Even when I use an official Pi 27W power supply or 45W USB-C charger I have.

I’ll try do this tonight, but think it’s just a case of needing an external power supply
