Error when browsing album artist

Hi,
whe I want to open some artist in Browse -> Artist, I get an error “An error occured while browsing the folder”. It happens for 3 of 30 Artists, I can’t find anything special about those. Their names are given as “Album Artist”, but it works for others. I can play affected songs via browsing by Album.
Any ideas?

I have the same issue on v2.246
38 songs out of 230 on my playlist have the same problem. There is no obvious commonality with the ones showing browsing errors.

What are your settings? Are you sorting artists by ‘artist’ or ‘albumartist’?

For the albums that do not work are the ‘albumartist’ and ‘artist’ tags the same? Are there any tracks on the problem albums where the ‘artist’ tag is the same as the artist you selected?

If you are sorting artists by ‘artist’ then it is possible to get this result where there are no tracks set to the name of the ‘albumartist’. I have one such album - Duet by Ronan Keating. All of the tracks are duets with another artist, so all artist tags are set to ‘Ronan Keating and xxxx’. So quite correctly it shows no tracks by Ronan Keating.

Hi everybody! I’m new here. Very happy with Volumio so far.

However, I have experienced similar behaviour when browsing by ‘albumartist’.
All of my music is tagged with specific albumartist tags. The albumartist tag is uniform for single albums.
‘artist’ tags may vary for single albums.

Example 1: When I browse through the Artist list from the library home (set to ‘albumartist’ in My Music settings), and select Schoolboy Q, for which I have one album in my collection, it correctly displays the album (under Albums) and all of its tracks (under Tracks). Under Tracks the artists are correctly displayes (tracks 1 and 2 show ‘Scholboy Q’, track 3 shows ‘Schoolboy Q feat. A$AP Rocky’ and track 4 shows ‘Schooboy Q feat. Jhené Aiko’ and so on).
Now, when I open the album or choose to play it, only tracks for which the ‘artist’ tags agree with the corresponding ‘albumartist’ tag are shown or sent to the cue (i.e. all tracks which just have ‘Schoolboy Q’ as ‘artist’).

Example 2: ‘albumartist’: ‘Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’
When I browse for ‘Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’, all of the albums and tracks are displayed correctly. However, the album artist for a specific album is incorrectly displayed as the (track) artist for the first track of that album (‘Karen O with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’). When I open it, only the first track is being displayed or sent to the cue. When I hit ‘Back’ I get a Browse error (‘An error occured while browsing the folder’).

Everything works fine when browsing through the directories.

So this is not a common problem? For me it renders the libraray organized by tags completely useless. And so far I have not found a solution other than browsing by directory, which is a pain, especially considering the library by tags looks very nice.

Are all your files the same format? (flac, mp3, m4a,…) Could it be that all problematic files are the same type and different from the others?
Not sure it is related at all, but whilst testing moode I went mad with a problem caused by a few Apple Lossless tracks.

It’s all FLAC files. I’ll check on whether that’s the cause of the problem. Thank you!

I converted an affected album to MP3, replaced the FLAC files and updated and rescanned My Music. Unfortunately, this does not seem to make any difference.

This has nothing to do with the file format. Converting from flac to mp3 or visa versa will achieve nothing.

There are multiple things that influence this:
[]The tracks where the artist and album-artist differ (an album with a single such track can cause issues)
[
]The “Sort Artists By” setting, which can either be “Album Artist” or “Artist”
[*]The list of strings used to identify compilation albums

I’ve looked through some of the code, and at least to me the above coalesce into seemingly inconsistent and unholy behavior, which I’ve been unable to figure out why most of it exists to begin with.

All you can really do right now is change the “Sort Artists By” setting and see if it helps. IMHO chances are neither will work for you under all circumstances, but one may be better than the other.

For my collection, Sort Artists By = Artist works better.
