Hi, I’m not a tech and a relatively newbie on Volumio. I use Volumio on a Rpi with a hifiberry digi+ pro board. My music is stored on a usb harddisk which is connected to my netgear router.
I suspect Volumio from making copies of my harddisk to the sd card of the rpi, for when I remove an album from my harddisk and rescan the database, restart etc., the album is still accessible and plays like ever before.
Volumio does not copy any data from a network drive to local storage on the Pi. It merely builds a database of the files available on the network drive. (You would need to have an SD card with incredible storage for this to even be possible.)
If the files are still indexed after a rescan (meaning wipe and rebuild the library), then they still exist on the network drive.
Are you sure you are deleting the files from the right drive? If you navigate to it yourself via the browser, can you verify that the files are deleted? Maybe your router is unintentionally set to automatic backup/restore?
External drives also have a Recycle Bin. Maybe Volumio reads the files from there?
