I wanted to see if I could use Volumio in my car. So I performed the following test:
I put the RPi 3 B+ based Volumio player in the car and drove to a place where no WiFi was available hoping Volimio would not see any networks and switch over to Hot Spot mode. I The tried to connect to Volumio with my iPod Touch through Safari as I do at home. I tried volumio2.local and it wouldn’t connect and since I wasn’t connected to Volumio I wasn’t able to check anything. So I gave up and drove back home.
From reading the documentation my understanding is that Volumio should have switched over to Hot Spot mode where I should be able to connect.
My question is:
Is my understanding correct?
What the heck did I do wrong?
How can I debug this in the car if I can’t connect?
The hotspot fallback bug has been reported, it’s raised as a bug on github too, Michelangelo believes he knows what’s up and has said he’ll work on it this week, time permitting.
Fingers crossed we’ll have a fix in place soon.
You need to connect to the hotspot by connecting to the Volumio wifi network.
The hotspot’s dhcp server will give you an ip address in the 192.168.211.xxx range, which then allows you to connect to 192.168.211.1 using safari (or any other browser). volumio.local might work too, but again, only after connecting to the hotspot first.
I was assuming that in the OP they had actually connected to the hotspot . Also, on thinking about it, volumio.local should also be ok on Apple gear: it’s just Android & Windows where it tends to be a bit problematic.
I checked my settings and I didn’t have the fallback option set. I turned the fallback option tried, tried it again and it worked. My issues is solved.
Thanks!
Jack
Really? That I don’t understand as myself and numerous others have not had such luck! The hotspot just Dora’s not start up when the network fails, on a fresh boot up then yes, it works.
