An old Philips hi-fi system from the late '70s and early '80s

… cleaned and repaired. The cassette deck was in pretty bad shape. Repairing the cassette mechanism just wasn’t worth it—too many parts and effort were required, and honestly, I don’t need another cassette player.
So, I repurposed it into a Volumio player. The components aren’t 100% from the same series; the amplifier and tuner are slightly older. But they’re quite similar.
There are still some cosmetic details I’ll probably work on, but for now, everything is functional as it is.

Love it!

yeah. well done.

That’s bloody clever. Even accounting for the fact that I’ve just had Christmas dinner, I needed to look several times! Chapeau!

Guess that’s not because of the food?

Indeed not!

Very nice, love it, probably sounds a lot better than the originals ever did.
As an ex-Philips employee, I owned a lot of their “mediocre” stuff, but then they had some outstanding audio technologies as well (SPDIF and some excellent dac chips).

Their 312 turntable was pretty decent. If you couldn’t afford a Thorens or Technics sl1200. I like the look of the set @Mario_Ivancic used, especially the tape deck.

A brilliant example of up-cycling. Well done!

Awesome project. How do you drive the VU meters?

1+ for the VU meter : are they active or just tuned half-way? If active I would like to know how you drive them from the RPi or DAC.

Thank you all for the compliments! Let me answer some follow-up questions:
The VU meters are fully functional. I used the REC input to “tap into” the original tape deck electronics. Nothing special – I simply permanently activated the “REC” switch and utilized the existing electronics that drive the VU meters.
I removed the original potentiometer for input signal strength and replaced it with a digital decoder connected to a Raspberry Pi. Now, this volume knob, through Volumio, controls the volume.
I’m still considering which functions to assign to the tape metal type switches and the Dolby switch. Currently, these two switches do not have any function.
