What DAC to buy?

read the manual of the E50, “Setup Menu”

Oh man, the difference…
@Wheaten as always, thanks very much!
How do you like yours by the way?

I believe it’s real value for the money.
Sounds are clean, details are in. It’s decoding MQA properly. (Something that pro-ject can learn from)

Don’t notice much difference between the E30 and E50. it seems to me that the E30 sounds a bit warmer.

Hi nibelhung
Er… why not fit a DAC on top of the Pi3B such as the HifiBerry DAC2 HD + improved power source

(I’m sure i read somewhere the jack was far from the best option to output sound out of the Pi when I worked on my (low) budget setup (Pi 3 B, + DAC2HD + latest Volumio + Thodio speakers)

[EDIT: just realised my answer came a little late as I was replying to an email notification from volumio; obviously in the meantime a few answers came in…
@Wheaten: see above > the mqa request was not in the original post + I wouldn’t have know anyway about the Hifiberry not supporting mqa as I only play lossless music (16/44 to (mostly) hi-res))

And since when are Hifiberry DAC’s supporting MQA? As requested by Nibelhung

[EDIT:] Your correct not the opening past, but in some later posts.

I used a HiFiBerry DAC hat with my hybrid valve/MOSFET amp and TL speakers, it sounds great. The 3.5mm jack on the Pi3B is not great.

I am extremely happy with my SMSL M300 MkII DAC but I’m connecting it through Volumio on a PI4 using USB. I’m not sure of the PI3 USB works as good as PI4 but thought I’d share my results as they have been very good. I’m send the DAC output to a Willsenton tube amp and Magnepan LRS speakers. I also use the peppymeter plugin as it has a great VU meter to see how compressed a stream might be.

I’m very pleased with my SMSL Sanskrit. Seems to be a great value for money option and looks good too.

  • IFI AUDIO ZEN DAC V2

I use this one and like it … very rich and full sound. For context, I have also used the DAC2 HD HAT and Dragonfly Red before. I liked the much IFI better. I used it for far mostly for headphones as it has a nice power matching feature, though I also paired with my amp using the RCA out. However it can only accept USB input. That was fine for me, though some people might want more input options if they will use the DAC with other sources.
