Volumio, Android phone and VLC

Volumio Primo, Volumio on Raspberry Pi, NFS fileserver and Samsung phone are all on the same network. Both Volumio use the NFS fileserver, have amplifier and speaker connected, and both work fine.

VLC on the phone detects both Volumio instances but can only see top level folders, not individual music files, so therefore I can’t use the phone/VLC as a player.
Oddly, until last week VLC would happily use the volumio instances as if they were fileservers, but suddenly this stopped working.

Phone ← VLC ← Volumio-Primo ← NFS-fileserver

The phone appeared to be seeing volumio as if it’s a fileserver. If that’s so, is it SMB? something else? What credentials does it need?

I could change the fileserver to SMB, but I have other good reasons for not doing that. Meantime Volumio is perfectly happy with NFS

It looks like it might be a permission problem, but it worked until last week and I haven’t changed anything.
