VOLUMIO and DACS, no sound

like the header says. Id like to be able to take all the music Ive ripped over the years and be able to remotely play it with a raspi. Instructions look easy enough, HUNDREDS of folks world wide get it done in like 20 minutes. Me? been beating away for 3 weeks. no go.

Just to say in the start, I have pretty much given up on picoreplayer. I don’t know TinmyCore well enough to be able to manipulate the cli well enough w/o screaming at my pc, so im focusing on VOLUMIO.

I have 2 RASPI setups, both raspis are new, as is 1 of the soundcards. Coincidentally the AudioInjector card is one of the 1st sound cards I bought and so far its been awesome!

HW 1 - RASPI 3B+ , AudioInjector Stereo card, 7" external HDMI monitor, usb kbd, usb mouse, 4TB external seagate HD, WIRED Net connection, about 6 ft from the router

HW 2 - RASPI 3B+ ,HIFIBERRY DAC + sound card (new), 7" external HDMI monitor, usb kbd, usb mouse, 4TB external seagate HD, WIRED Net connection, about 6 ft from the router

HW1
Just to make sure (I come from the era of pizza box computer building), I installed Raspbian on a clean SD card and followed the directions here:
flatmax.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3

and everything seemed to be ok.

Pulled the SD card formatted it loaded the latest volumio image on it, and realized that the drivers were going to have to be installed (ok the .deb that says scripts) SO after MUCH late night wrangling I finally got them loaded, and when I went into volumio setup, found that in the first selection, I had the audio injector card as a selection. Mater of fact it almost seemd like it was the ONLY selection. Everytim I hit the drop down it would go to that selection immediately and populate the section box.

THEN when I hit SAVE it reverted back to GENERIC OUTPUT MODEL. after several attempts I finally got it to SAVE with AI card in both the output AND the DAC boxes.

Go out to the play screen and NO SOUND. I have my RCA plugged into a YAMAHA VSX816 w/ some nice floor speaker…nada
headphone jack on the raspi, nada (THAT I found very weird)
Ill include 2 pix if I can.
But everything looks good no errors nothing

I did find that I had to add in this page in order to get the card to appear as a selection:

flatmax.org/phpbb/viewtopic. … umio#p5054

but NO SOUND

VOLUMIO.attempt1.jpg

FORCED.CARD.jpg

Now for #2, this SEEMED to be good from the get go, just NO SOUND.

Difference was: I was able to go straight in and select the card from the initial drop down, but again, everything says green no sound.
No errors but no sound

I even went so far as to plug this one into a different receiver, no go

anyone have ANY ideas they would be greatly appreciated

thanks

Odd that you’re getting no sound out of two hardware setups. If you do a fresh install and don’t include an i2s, do you have output on the audio jack?

ill let you know.

many of the posts i saw said that a bad SD card was the issue, so i bought a brand new one and am working on it now.

I have 6 RPi’s of various ages, with various DACs in various rooms, all successfully runing PcP from another RPi running LMS. At no time have I ever had to use the command line; all access and control is either via the web page, or an android app.

You do not need to know Tinycore…

CHISMS1

Well success of sort.
Went back to the hifiberry setup, since at LEAST that cards listed in the volumio setup
used a new install and a new SD card…sigh no go

THEN I tried turning OFF the I2S as you suggested (it reset the output to the audio jack) and NOW I have sound through my headset

I did cheat a little I “borrowed” my 12yo’s headset as a “known good” start

That was GREAT, next suggestion?

As for the 2nd poster whose setup 7-8 of these and never gone to a CLI, GREAT, happy for you, not sure how it helps but, maybe itll seep in somehow!

I DID however determine one of the things that finihes TinyCoreplayer for me for good.

Apparently it doesnt like a drive larger than 3GB (what year is this?)

I know Im a data junkie, but I work too hard at collecting/protecting and backing up my music to start chunking it up into smaller partitions,

But thats just me…

hey I heard this RUNE thing…

I don’t know how and why you’re getting confused with TinyCore? You need no knowledge of, or interaction with, Tinycore to run PiCorePlayer. Have a look at their latest website here:

https://www.picoreplayer.org/

PiCorePlayer is a distinct software system in it’s own right, easy to install and configure from a web page (no CLi required) My installation has a 2TB LMS drive which is accessed from all my RPi’s (no 3GB limit!)

Yes, but he is having an issue with Volumio, suggesting another distro is not very helpful…

The possible issues I see are:

  • The audioinjector card is not officially supported by Volumio, can you contact the manufacturer and ask what’s needed to make it work?
  • I see you have connected a lot of stuff to the PI, which can create some power issues. Are you able to use a powered USB hub to power at least the HDMI monitor and the hard drive? Do you have sound if you do it?

Point taken!

But he did start his post by saying he’d initially tried and given up with the other distro, for reasons which I believe were mistaken.
