I agree with Wheaten. The sound, frequency response, instrument separation and overall sense of space are created during the mastering stage (in the studio). How the music was recorded is important.
Sometimes classic CDs sound much better than dense 24/192kHz files. Upsampling won’t help. Apart from auditory impressions (because it’s a subjective feeling), the issue of sampling frequency is just mathematics…
It is much better (i.e. it can bring us closer to what the musicians wanted to convey to us) to experiment with speaker placement, soundproofing the listening room, eliminating reflections and finding the right listening position, because we can influence these factors. Let’s remember that upsampling does not bring us closer to the ‘original’, it is just a technical trick (if it makes some people feel better, why not, it’s legal
).
