I have tinkerboard S with latest volumio edition 2.513.
I also have RPI3b+ with latest volumio edition 2.513.
My DAC is an FPGA DAC based on Xilinx Artix 7 with XMOS chip.
With RPI3b+ i have no problem whatsoever to play any audio files(16 bit, 24 bit , DSD etc) over USB.
When i switch to TInkerboard S i can play 44.1khz/16 bit audio files over USB without any problem . However when i play files over 16 bit(24bit or 32 bit regardless of sampling frequency) i hear clicking noises during playback . With DSD files (.dsf) i only hear white noise, no music at all.
I had similar issues (especially clicking) on an old RPi 2 - turned out to be a simple bandwidth problem because the network interface runs through the USB bus.
You could try and check if the problem for PCM disappears if you load the files from the internal storage (SD card). Not that it’d be a solution, just for a test.
For the DSD part, my best guess is a driver issue. I had the DSD-white-noise-problem multiple times with foobar2000 (or any media player for that matter) running on Win 10. Could only resolve it with a fresh install of the DAC driver. PCM was still working by the way.
Hello Andreas,
I have the same problem, that is clicking noises on files over 16 bit (haven’t tried DSD). The problem only appears when using a Schiit Eitr into a Lampucera DAC (it has no usb port); With a borrowed SMSL DAC I get no sound at all. It makes no difference whether the file is internally stored or on an attached SSD. USB playback into the SMSL is OK. Did you ever find a solution?

David
