SOLVED Crackling and electrical interference noises

I love volumio, and have it running pretty much all the time I’m in the house, to the extent that my hi-fi now consists of a Pi2 B with IQAudio DAC, my amp, and an old Rotel tuner for if I really need to listen to the news and the internet is out.

My setup is as follows:

Volumio 2.638 on Raspberry Pi 2 Model B
IQAudio DAC +
SanDisk Ultra card
Arcam A72 amp
NorthPanda (I think) power supply

I used to network via wireless but it was unreliable (because of the local environemnt as far as I can tell) so it’s now networked via an TPLink PowerLink adaptor, which uses your electric circuit to carry the signal.

The issue is that I get crackling through the amp. It comes through at a constant volume regardless of the volume setting, and regardless of which input is selected. I thought it was the amp itself, so I took the cover off to see if I could spot anything obvious (and because I’ve had it about 15 years and never cleaned the inside …) and after a dust it sounded clean. So I put it back together and reconnected the Pi, and realised that it was the Pi making the crackle because it came back immediately.

SOLUTION - as I was typing this up I was thinking what solutions might be suggested and it occurred to me that it might not be the best idea to have the Pi and the PowerlInk in the same 4-way socket, so I moved the PowerLink and the crackiling has gone - so in trying to explain the issue I’ve found my own solution, but as I’d started typing it up I’ll post it in case it helps someone else.

Thanks again to all involved in this awesome project. Happy listeniing.

I had a similar experience with AVM (Fritz) powerlines. So it seem to be a bad idea to have these objects in the neighborhood of a HiFi amplifier.
