Raspberry Pi 5 8GB - Out-of-Memory (OOM) Killer Activations

Ahhhh.
O.K. sounds interesting.
I give it a try in just this moment

Keep you posted.

Hey @rkorell,

Please take a look here.

Kind Regards,

At least the image from Raspi-Imager “works” exactly the same, as the other image.
Because I was curious which version would be installed, I’ve activated system-info plugin.

At least there occurs the first error message I’ve seen yet: “Audio Hardware detection seems to fail” .

rest of status is non-spectacular.

Audio Hardware is currently NOT installed - use “HDMI 0” - is THIS the error?
I do not have a HDMI device connected…

Regards,
Ralf

Yes, this is exactly what I had done all the time - option 2 with Balena Etcher.

Using Pi-Imager was a (naive) trial to do “something different”.

Dear @nerd , dear @Wheaten

Yes, it IS.

I definitely do not understand this, but the “bare” approach leads to the described errors.

If I connect a TV to HDMI 0, the player starts to work.

It seems hardware is more “connected” as I thought - it defenitely didn’t come to my mind that I really have to connect an output device.
Sorry for that.

What persists as error: If I click on the skip forward or skip backward button in Web-Interface the skip will be done but the player falls back to “pause” - music stops.
Re-Clicking on “play” sometimes works, sometimes not…

Is this all eventually related to HDMI ??? (sound does NOT appear on TV…) .
Will this may be “healed” if I would supply a DAC?

Really a LOT of thanks to both of you for your great help!

Ralf

BTW: The Pi5 now boots from NVME an image from Volumio’s site

And: booting is REALLY FAST …
(navigating GUI not that fast - but: HDMI. too ???)

Ralf

Hey @rkorell,

When no DAC is connected, HDMI 0 is the default audio output on the Raspberry Pi 5. Volumio automatically selects it because the Pi 5 does not have an analog audio jack. If no HDMI device is connected, Volumio may not detect an active audio output, leading to playback issues.

Kind Regards,

Yes, thanks for this.
Any idea for the remaining issues?

Thanks & warm regards,
Ralf

Hey @rkorell,

For the clarity and benefit of the community - can you compile a list please?

Kind Regards,

 Yes for sure.

  • “Play” works (sometimes - see below)
  • If I click on the skip forward or skip backward button in Web-Interface
skip happens but the player falls back to “pause” - music stops.
  • Re-Clicking on “play” sometimes works, sometimes not…

Regards,
Ralf

Hey @rkorell,

I thought I have explained this; avoiding any confusion how Volumio audio stage works:

Since there is no audio output device like a DAC connected and nothing plugged into the HDMI ports, Volumio has no active audio hardware to control. Functions like playback and track skipping rely on an available audio output, and without one, the player cannot continue playback properly. Connecting a DAC or an HDMI device with audio should resolve this issue.

Kind Regards,

Yes, understood.
The above errors occured when my TV was connected to HDMI 0 - which currently is defined as Volumio output…

Dear @nerd ,
I’m really happy to announce that the described residual errors are definitely correlated to HDMI.
Today an additional HiFiBerry DAC arrived and it simply works.
So finally thanks a LOT for your patience and your guidance.
Highly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Ralf
