Full Changelog

v4.004 – May 31, 2025

Breaking Changes:

  • New partition layout is now in effect.
A fresh flash is required to upgrade to this version.
OTA is blocked on older layouts.

  • OTA partition size check is active on Bookworm.
Systems with /boot partitions smaller than 380 MB will be blocked from updating.
A modal warning will appear via the UI explaining the required reflash.

Pi:

  • Improved early detection of USB Wi-Fi adapters during boot and update processes.

x86:

  • Continued improvements to ACPI handling (power and input events).

Known Issues:

  • Devices flashed with older layouts must reflash to receive future updates.
  • Minimum storage requirement remains 8GB.
  • Unchanged – see previous release.

v4.004 – May 29, 2025

Changes:

Pi:

  • Added rtw88 Wi-Fi modules for improved Realtek chipset support.

x86:

  • Further ACPI handling improvements (e.g., power buttons, key events).

All Platforms:

  • Release channel selector now available at http://<volumio_ip>/dev
    Options include: Stable, Test, Alpha

Known Issues:
Unchanged – see previous release.

All Platforms

  • Integrated custom firmware injection system.

Pi:

  • Ensured rfkill is unblocked before hostapd during image build.
  • volumio_rfkill_unblock.service now uses Wants= and After= to guarantee startup order.

x86:

  • Corrected ACPI button handling (brightness, mute, volume).
  • Input handling optimized.
  • Kernel updated to 6.12.30.

Known Issues:

  • TIDAL Connect – under developer review.
  • Qobuz Connect – under developer review.

  • OTA update support activated from v0.067 onward.

  • Merged volumio-os PR #133:

    • Initramfs diagnostics and recovery shell on critical boot failure.
    • Improved overlay mount handling and fallback behavior.
  • Wi-Fi subsystem improved to better handle rfkill soft-blocks and problematic USB dongles.

  • Standardized hardware support request template added to forum thread.

Raspberry Pi

  • firmware-volumio bundle added for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and SoC firmware.
  • Unified build logic from bookworm/pi and Bookworm branches.

x86

  • Kernel Mode Setting (KMS) and framebuffer support enabled.
  • Realtek HDA codec support added: ALC663 and ALC897.
  • Realtek 88XXAU USB Wi-Fi driver included.
  • CIFS/SMB kernel module support enabled.
  • Improved rfkill handling after suspend/resume or cold boot.
  • ACPI keymap fallback logic implemented for brightness, mute, and volume keys (from PR #133).

Known Issues

  • Brightness and function keys may still behave inconsistently on some x86 laptops.

  • Devices on v0.066 or earlier must reflash to receive v0.068 or future updates.

  • We have identified a risk that the current partition layout may be too restrictive. A recalculation is underway.

    • This will require a fresh reflash in one of the upcoming releases.
    • The minimum supported storage size is now 8GB (previously 4GB).

v0.067 – May 19, 2025

  • Partition layout updated – required for OTA support starting in v0.068.
