Multiple USB drives

Hello, first time posting. I have searched but do not find an answer, perhaps because I do not know how to ask the question properly.
I have Volumio working on a Raspberry Pi 3B using HIFIBerry DAC. I have one USB drive with regular listening library, l also have a separate USB drive of Christmas music for this time of year. I have tried to have both drives plugged in at the same time as well as only one. No matter what I do not see the Christmas Drive. Can I do this?
Because I am new I have not yet subscribed to Premium, do I need that to do what I want?

Hello. No, you don’t need Premium for this. It’s possibly that your Pi’s power supply is not quite powerful enough to run two drives at once.

I assume you mean larger Ma capacity? Would this also speed up the wifi response?

Pis are sensitive to low power, if you have a screen you can see a lightning symbol when there’s not enough juice. Too many power hungry usb devices can do this.

This is a useful article. Dealing with the Low Voltage Warning on the Raspberry Pi - Pi My Life Up.

Not likely to be the cause of poor wifi connection though.

Thanks Simon, I appreciate your help.

a few hints:

  • use a powerful power supply, at least 5V/3A
  • add this string in userconfig.txt file via ssh

max_usb_current=1

you prob. can’t.
Adding the line as suggested by Darmar, will set the total max current over USB to 1200mA (4 ports)
So if you connect 2 un powered USB disks.
The momentary current of SSD can exceed 1.6A per disk, which will not work.
The momentary current of HDD can exceed 1.2A, which already is critical.
On both the peak current can even exceed those numbers.

Please located the power consumption of you disks, most likely on the disk decal.
And prob. your better of using an external powered hub for your disks.
