Introducing Nova: a new UI built with you

Bugfix release for NOVA

v0.260929.0

Fixed
:bug: Fixed missing fonts, icons and credits page
:bug: Going back from an artist or album page opened via ā€œGo to artist/albumā€ now returns you to Now Playing instead of jumping to your library.
:bug: The system update, sleep and alarm dialog titles no longer wrap awkwardly on narrow screens or with longer translations.

we’ll look into that, let’s see what we can do

I’m not sure whether this is related to the plugin, but when I access albums and tracks through the ā€œRecently addedā€ plugin, no metadata is displayed, such as the release date, track duration, or audio format.

Hi, and thanks for the great work on the new Nova UI — I really enjoy using it.

I’d like to request an option to adjust the size of the text displayed in the Listening tab (track title, artist name, etc.). On regular PC or phone screens the default size is fine, but many users — including me — run Volumio on custom-built players with non‑standard displays, for example 1920Ɨ515. On such screens the currently playing track information appears too small to read comfortably.

The old Now Playing plugin partially solved this, but it hasn’t been developed for a long time, and the new Nova interface is much cleaner and more stable — I’d prefer to rely on the built‑in UI rather than external plugins.

It would be extremely helpful if Nova offered at least a basic setting to increase the text size in the Listening view. Even a simple small/medium/large option would make a big difference for custom hardware setups.

Thanks for considering this improvement.

Hi, a suggestion: it would be useful - on smartphone - if the screen stayed active while the lyrics view is open during playback. This would make it easier to follow the lyrics without having to repeatedly wake or unlock the device.

New day new Nova update!

v0.261001.0

New
:musical_note: Hovering over a track that will start playing now shows a play icon over its artwork.

Improved
:zap: Nova starts faster, with less to download before you can use it and smaller font files.
:earth_africa: Nova now remembers your language and shows it right away, with no flash of English first.
:dvd: Browsing large music libraries and dragging songs in the queue is smoother, and local library pages load instantly once you’ve visited them.
:arrow_forward: The current track now appears immediately when you reload, before the connection finishes reconnecting.

Fixed
:bug: Going back from a search result no longer re-runs the search or jumps your scroll position.
:bug: SoundCloud album and playlist names no longer show stray HTML code.
:bug: Nova now reloads itself if a tab was left open through a device restart or update, instead of getting stuck on an old version.
:bug: Several contrast and touch-target issues were fixed in Now Playing, the queue and settings.

ā€œSoundCloud album and playlist names no longer show stray HTML codeā€ - It works perfectly. Thanks
Is it possible to add track numbers?

I would like to suggest an improvement to the CD ripping functionality. First of all, the ripping process itself (extracting CD-Audio to FLAC directly to the device’s memory) works absolutely perfectly—great job on that!

However, I often run into issues with CD recognition and track naming. While mainstream and popular artists are tagged properly, the system struggles to recognize local, national artists, and compilation albums.

When I rip CDs on my PC using software like foobar2000, I can choose from several metadata servers (such as MusicBrainz, GnuDB / freedb2, or foo_zero_metadata). Because it checks multiple sources, at least one server usually has my CD in its database, ensuring correct tags.

I am not sure which specific database Volumio currently uses, as it is not visible in the settings. Would it be possible to implement a feature where Volumio queries multiple databases automatically to find a match, or alternatively, add a dropdown/toggle in the settings so the user can manually select which database to use?

Adding this would make the CD ripping feature much more reliable for users with diverse or local music collections.

Thank you for your time and keep up the great work!

Hi,

In an external HDMI monitor (without touch capabilities) the left vertical bar is a bit useless. Any chance to make it optional for an external HDMI monitor?

The center message still keeps showing if after two reboots

I’d missed that you’d added a DSP button option on the playing screen, allowing you to enable/disable DSP effects without having to continuously go back and forth to the plugin options. Excellent!

As most of this is in Volumio core (backend), why can’t we have an x86-64 version to play with? It is is one of your ā€œsupportedā€ platforms nevertheless

Well, let’s make them hear us this time… we really need album release years :date:

It would be very helpful if you could provide the option to add images to one’s own playlists—for all created folders.

I wish I could have the new Nova interface, but a Premium subscription is $10AU per month here in Australia. I don’t think I need or want premium for anything else. It seems like a lot when the content is already owned and hosted by me.

For comparison, Amazon Prime is $10AU per month here and you get content for that (along with free delivery for purchases).

Edit: I’d mistyped the Euro price into a currency converter and got $25AU, it should be $10AU. So it isn’t as bad as it initially looked.

Can a playback indicator be added?

Firstly, I didn’t know Nova only came with the premium subscription (for non Volumio device users). I’ve seen no mention of that restriction. Secondly, I hope you do realise you are using a piece of software, that a professional team makes and maintains, for free so complaining about having to pay for premium features sounds a bit… weird?

A very minor issue. When playing a stream through the UPnP renderer the controls and time bar are correctly greyed out on the Listening pane, but the (greyed out) playing time counter on the left of the time bar keeps being updated from 0:00 to about 0:08 or so and then goes back to 0:00 and so on.
