How long should a scan take?

I just installed the latest version dated 2/18, and rebooted and it has been reading the USB HDD for three days. I see no evidence that it is creating a database on the settings (no count of artists or albums) nor can I see the drive in the music library. I do see the HDD being accessed and the pi interating. I am running a Pi B and have over 50,000 songs at about 400Gb of music. Should I pull the plug and retry at this point, or hang in there. It would be nice to hear some music…

I have around half of that amount sitting in my nas which is connected via smb share with an RPIZeroW in my lan.
Full scan of the lib is about 10…15 minutes depending on wlan speed and load.
So i guess there is something wrong.
If the Volumio is accessable via ssh: Shell into it and do a shutdown.
Otherwise you’d have to pull the plug. This is not the proper method but sometimes the only possibility.
You should not loose data because Volumio does not write into the files residing on the drive.
Next thing to do would be loading a fresh image to the RPI and check the usb drive in a pc .
I would suggest using another drive or usb device with far less music to test the basic functions you need.
My best guess is
The usb drive needs an external power supply?
If it is a standard spinning harddisk: Is the noise the drive makes periodically? Which could mean that the controller is in a loop…
Hm…try.

Thanks for the guidance. I ended up pulling the plug. I am searching around for a smaller drive now.
