[GUIDE] Kodi on Volumio 2.x -> Install on a nonvolumio image

I have the same problem with Allo BOSS v1.2 on a RPi 3 model B.

I get only HDMI, Analogue, HDMI Analogue & ALSA Default (BCM2835 ALSA) as four options in “WEBSERVER 8080” and no options for ALLO BOSS. In volumio I have set ALLO BOSS as I2S device and successfully use that too. BTW I drive my BOSS and RPi with separate power supplies. Can that be the cause?

Although the next post by @danielfelix shows it can be done, its not clear to me. Please guide.

BTW thanks to @Saiyato for the marvellous KODI plugin. This is the most succesfully implemented KODI plugin amongst all the similar softwares. Not only that the installation is flawless, made for the noobs and complete in all respect. Loving it. Thanks Saiyato.

Hi Partha,

I will re-install my Pi2 (similar to 3) and test with a Boss 1.0 today (I have no 1.2).
Have you turned off the startup sound? This might help, it was necessary for Hifiberry AMP, maybe Boss 1.2 has the same problem.

Cheers

Update: it just hit me, have you updated your UIConfig file? The following commands must be executed, else the plugin will not save its settings:

sudo mv /data/plugins/miscellanea/kodi/UIconfig.json /data/plugins/miscellanea/kodi/UIConfig.json systemctl restart volumio

The patch is ready and awaiting approval by Volumio.

The installation was easy, I just had some problems but these steps were quite easy to follow. However, there is a lot we can do with Kodi from changing the screen to layout, everything is possible. Here are few Kodi Tips and Tricks you can add more spice to your Kodi.

Added lazy installation instructions in the repo, so you can easily install the latest (working) version.

@Saiyato, you are spot on.
I ran the commands. The ALSA default BCM2835 vanished but BOSS was not shown.
I disabled startup sound, and the Allo BOSS DAC Analogue (1.2) was there. I selected the BOSS and tested a video sound. Fabulous. I am very happy although my dual micro SD card adapters became obsolete.
Many many Thannnnnnnnnnnnnks.

Got a question regarding getting Kodi to work on the latest Volumio. I got a Rpi3b+ and an Allo Digione board.

I’ve setup Volumio and the music part of the setup works just fine. Now I’m trying to get Kodi to work as well. Plug is installed within plugin menu in Volumio, and it seems to work, I can at least log into the web interface, however, I can’t figure out how to add e.g. a USB stick that’s plugged into the Rpi as a source.

Also, I’m not sure how the settings in both the plugin and in Kodi settings menu should be in order for me to be able to play video through HDMI and get audio through Digione board when using Kodi, and audio through Digione in Volumio if I only play music.

Does anyone with the same setup have a short overview of how the settings should be in order to work? Also, how do I get to add the source of choice? I’ve read several guides for Kodi and most of them mention a file manager where you can add sources, but as far as I can see there is no item on the side menu called “File manager” - hence why I’m confused.

Update; I see now that I get a totally different screen on my TV compared to what I get in the web interface, so maybe I should try to connect a keyboard to the Rpi and configure it through the GUI on the TV instead?

Update 2: I figured out I could use the official Android app to control what’s on the TV, so I can add sources now, but the problem wrt settings remains. Any help here is appreciated!

Update 3: Can play video, but without sound. Sounds works again when in Volumio. Damn, what a mess this is!

Hi there,

I’ve written down some info in the github repo: github.com/Saiyato/volumio-kodi-plugin
Also, there should be info in the plugin as well: you have to enable the DAC/soundcard in the plugin to use it in Kodi. After you’ve enabled it, you need to restart Kodi (stop/start plugin or reboot), after which you can select the soundcard in the Kodi sound configuration. If you set the keep audio device alive higher, you need to wait longer to be able to hear your music from the DAC/soundcard.

I’m not really reading what you’ve done exactly, which makes it hard to help you.

In short, I believe it should be somewhere in one of the Kodi topics as well:

  1. install plugin
  2. reboot, because you’ve changed the GPU memory size
  3. enable DAC in the plugin
  4. choose your soundcard in Kodi
  5. enjoy HiFi in Kodi

If you are playing a video/song in Kodi, you can’t use the soundcard in Volumio and vice versa. Both will release the card after x-seconds of inactivity, after which another application can use the card.

As for the file manager, that is basic Kodi functionality, I’m pretty sure it can be sound in one of the settings pages, but this changed as of Kodi Krypton. You’ll either have to click around a bit or consult the Kodi forums, I always use ‘add video source’ and select new or something similar. But it’s been a while since I’ve tinkered with Kodi.

Thanks for the detailed reply, and sorry for my late response - been out travelling for some weeks now so haven’t been home and able to play around with this since I posted here.

Will give it a try to follow your steps this weekend to see if I can get it working as I want.

Trying now, and I start to wonder that everything is going wrong the moment I try to select the DAC in the Kodi plugin settings; I don’t have a DAC connected to the RPi, but a Allo Digione that I’ve connected to my stereo that has a DAC board, which is the one I want to use. Also, what to select for the HDMI hotplug option? I want the video to be streamed to the TV through the HDMI cable, but the audio of the same stream to the Allo Digione board → my stereo w/ DAC.

Update: just switched to LibreELEC and there everything worked out quite easy as soon as the dtoverlay was set in the config, so sticking to that as I got what I want for now.

Hi,
is there any progress?

I successfully installed Kodi via the plugin management console of volumio on my rpi 3.

is there a chance to install Kodi addons within Kodi? can this be done via ssh? alternative solutions are welcome!

You can just install them from the desired repo’s, no problem.

I successfully installed Kodi yesterday with the aid of your plugin. Thanks for the work you’ve put into this.
I first tried it the other way around (first Kodi, than adding Volumio) but that did’n’t work. Than I discovered your plugin and it works like a breeze. Thanks again from a fellow citizen of Woudenberg!

Awesome to hear, enjoy!

Hi, i’ve just installed the kodi plugin on my rpi3 without issue, but on my sparky board i keep getting libbrcmGLESv2.so error from command line even if the plugin installation seems right. Tried each time to reboot after installing but i’m totally lost and i can’t figure it out after lots of searching. Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

This is because the repo is not for the Sparky and I can’t really test it because I don’t own one. Can you provide me with the repo and means to detect a Sparky?

Hi Saiyato. Thanks for the reply.
I would like to help, but i’m totally new to sbc scene. I’ve only downloaded and installed the volumio image for Sparky and after that your plugin. How can i provide you with the correct infos? Again thank you.

Hi there,

I’m not sure how the Sparky board works, but I presume somewhat like the Pi’s. We’ll need a ppa (package archive) with a compiled Kodi package and its dependencies. I can add that to the installation script, that way it would be possible to install Kodi on a Sparky board. I’ve tried compiling Kodi and all dependencies myself, but it proved to be quite the hassle, so I can’t do that I’m afraid

Hello, does KODI plugin work on rpi4?
My volumio2 ver 2.632 it looks doesn’t work. Not sure I m missing orbdoing something wrong.
Anyone else has tried to use KODI plugin on RPI4?

I wish to use volumio to play music and the same rpi4 to play movie h265.

rpi3 works fine but can’t support h265

Thanks
Giacomo

Hi, thank for your nice reply.
After searching i’ve found this ppa available for the sparky sbc:

kodi:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: 2:17.1+dfsg1-3
Version table:
2:17.1+dfsg1-3 500
500 ftp.debian.org/debian stretch/main armhf Packages

Can it be of any help? Again thank you for your help.
