I think the minidnla-server is not working out of the box.
I can connect to the volumio:root server but all directories/folders are empty.
Do I need to change anything in the configuration?

There is no dlna server at the moment, it just acts as a discovery platform to let you edit some files, and to upload files for Ramplay…
