Connection drops with static IP, no hot spot activated

This is a follow up to a previous post https://volumio.org/forum/winbind-nmbd-smbd-such-file-directory-messages-t11032.html. I’m trying to resolve some problems I’m having with my Allo Boss Player running Volumio 2.457 and connecting to a network via a TP-Link TL-WN822N.

I thought I’d resolved the network problems I mentioned in the previous thread: the gateway ip was incorrect and it took me an embarrassing amount of time to figure that out, starting with a fresh install that erased the static ip and suddenly was working correctly and re-setting up the static ip worked fine and the player seemed to work great.

In fact, it was working better: it was connecting to internet, updateing the clock, etc. and that meant better functioning for the player.

However, the wlan network connection continued to drop when the player was idle and I couldn’t recover without a hard restart, no hot spot was initiated when the connection is dropped. I know the later is a problem that is being discussed in other threads.

When I disable the static ip, this doesn’t happen and the connection is stable. I would like to be able to have a static ip, however, for making connection to browser IU on different devices more predictable.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What if you assign the IP statically from the router instead?

You don’t say how you set your static address, but if it’s via Volumio then set it at the router (assuming that it has that capability), or vice-versa. Alternatively stay with a dynamic address, install “bonjour” on Windows/Mac, or “avahi” on Linux, and then reference your device in the browser by it’s name eg. volumiokitchen.

On a side note, I had the same problem with a device at the furthest distance from any AP in the house, which used to drive me mad, and I never got to the reason why, rationalising it as a poor wifi signal problem. I have since run ethernet to the room and added a new AP, and it has been rock steady.

Edit: ah, beaten to the suggestion by Michelangelo … too long in writing post

Thanks for the fast replies, you guys are champs.

OK, so I set up the static IP in my router. And then I set it up in Volumio too. I gather from what you’re saying that would be redundant and I should just leave the static IP in volumio disabled and let the router do it by itself?

OK. I’ll let you know if I have any further problems with it. Right now it seems to be working beautifully.
