Audio passthrough over physical connection

I have volumio running on a RPi 3A+ connected to my amplifier, which sends sound from volumio to my stereo speakers. Between my two speakers sits my television. Currently my television is not plugged into my speakers, and whenever I want to play audio from my television I need to unplug the volumio from the amp, since the amp only has a single pair of RCA inputs. I know I could purchase a hardware audio mixer to solve the problem, but I am hoping to avoid doing that. I would like to pass audio from an external sound source (in this case, my television) to an unused port on my RPi, and use software to route the incoming external sound source to the main audio outputs on the RPi, which I will leave plugged into my amp. In my case, setting up an HDMI connection between my TV and RPi might be the easiest. A USB connection could also work, since both the RPi and the television have ports for USB and HDMI (and with the right adapters any type of physical connection is possible). So I am wondering if this feature exists in the current volumio software, or if there is some plugin or other software solution that I could use to make my television more compatible with volumio.
