ALLO Boss

Hi,

how shall I power my setup (RPi3+Allo+Volt)? At the moment I’ve got 2 PSUs but maybe the Allo PSU is enough?!
Recommendations?

Michael

Allo PSU should be sufficient.

Alright, thanks.

Thanks a lot Patrick. I’ve ordered an Ice power 50w diy set (specifically http://www.ebay.com/itm/BANG-amp-OLUFSEN-50ASX2-SE-/322652320404? and https://www.ghentaudio.com/kit/asx50-sr.html, around 100euros total). The power module should have a sensitivity of 2Vrms, so I hope that will match Boss fine. What I don’t know is if impedance matches, and I can’t find the output impedance for Boss on Allo’s site. If the output impedance is too high I apparently need an input buffer (= preamp) before the power amp. I guess I’ll see… Also ordered Klipsch rp-160m which should be easy to drive. I’ve never before bought so much without having heard any of it

About the digital volume I’ll also just wait and see, its over my head how many ways there are to do it. As I understand it yes, some append zeros just so they can cut them away later without degrading the signal, but I may be wrong.

You should be fine. I’ve just built up a power amp using the exact same IcePower module (from the same seller). I’ve fed it with both a Mamboberry LS+ DAC and a BOSS ( the Mamboberry is quoted at 250 ohm impedance, much less than the 800 ohm minimum suggested before needing a buffer) with great results. I’m using PCP, with volume control via LMS or the android app.

I think you’ll be impressed, but give it time to settle down.

Datasheet of pcm5122 sugests it can drive loads as low as 1Kohm …basically the imp per channel of the DAC ic (using the 1/10 rule) should be 50R

Hi Andre, Ioan

It would be useful if you could quote output impedance for all of your DACs, in all modes…

Thanks very much Yatsushiro, thats very comforting:-) I’m coming from a rather expensive surround combo, and Boss into Marantz sr7005 into Klipsch rp-160m (received today, nice buys to do right now) is already crazy good and much much better to my ears. Hoping icepower will be even better. The last step I’ve just found out is possible would be room correction on the PI with BruteFir. If I am right this is possible I am sure it will be heavenly:-) Do you have experience with that?

Sorry for ignorance, but what is PCP and LMS? Thanks

Edit: also sorry for hijacking…

Haven’t yet got to playing with BruteFir…

PCP is PiCorePlayer https://sites.google.com/site/picoreplayer/home, which is an updated implementation of the old Logitech Squeeze players, written for the RPi. It’s an alternative to the other Pi players, such as Volumio, Moode, Rune etc, and offers some different options, such as multiroom sync out of the box. LMS is Logitech Media Server http://forums.slimdevices.com/, which is essentially a music library management system, and can be installed in PC’s, SBC’s etc. It also offers web based radio, Spotify, Deezer, Tidal, BBC iPlayer integration and a whole lot more…

for brutefir in volumio, have a look here volumio-plugins-collection-t6251.html

Please search the forum for brutefir and volumio 2 and post what is related to brutefir to the thread, not here.
Thanks

Very interesting way of using the Boss  I had been looking at the IcePower modules already some time ago. I even backed a Kickstarter project that was trying to ‘mass’ produce a very nice amp that could hold an RPi with a DAC (like the Boss) and uses the IcePower as well (The website is still there at https://audioberry.com/zula/. You can find a lot of information there.) Unfortunately, the Kickstarter didn’t make it, but they still offer it at their shop. Do not know if they actually deliver though.

So I be very, very, very interested to learn how your project goes. Please keep us informed  I already find myself looking at sites to score an IcePower module myself

Hi,
I’m testing for few days my brand new allo boss player. I would say it sounds very very well ! I really like this system, very nice bass, no agressive medium.
I’m rediscovering my collection.
In one word, I’m happy !

Hi all,

Just got my first Pi3 and Boss DAC. I only want this setup for Spotify Connect so right away I installed the plugin from Balbuze and all seems to work OK except two things.

Firstly, there is this incredibly loud ear piercing burst of short noise when I hit Play, it does not do it between tracks, only if I Pause/Stop and Play. It is very loud and not affected by the volume level of the player and since the Pi3 is connected directly to my massive active speakers, it is very scary and painful  This could be a Spotify Connect plugin issue I presume

Second issue is volume adjustment. Seems like I have to turn up more than half way before I can hear anything and then it quickly gets very loud. I have tried all sorts of combinations within Volumios playback settings and doesnt change much. I use Hardware mixer with Digital control and its pretty much the only option that gives me audio AND some control over its level.

Any suggestions appreciated, thanks!

Hi!
I met the same problem. I’m trying to understand what happen but I have no clue yet…

Hey Balbuze!

I am assuming its your plugin? Thank you very much for this!

I realized I had installed 1, so now I tried with 2 and at least the click is of bearable level now, no head exploding everytime I press play but now it clicks everytime track is changed.

Also volume level control is better.

Still much better than 1 overall so I will stick with this one for now.

Hi, I have RPI zero w + Allo mini boss DAC installed volumio version 2.31. but no sound. Plz help, in playback options which DAC model should apply for mini boss.

Hello,

Can someone tell me which numbers of pins in gpio I must connect from raspberry to Boss Dac ?
Thank You.

This page answers your question, I believe:
