Hello Volumio Community!
I’m Sean, new to Volumio but a longtime tech enthusiast and professional. Like many of you, I have a deep passion for music—I’ve dabbled in DJing with Traktor gear, explored DAWs and audio processing/programming using tools like VB Audio’s Matrix and Voicemeeter, and built up a solid collection of tracks, songs, and sets stored across my home-built NAS and Synology NAS via NFS, CIFS, and iSCSI.
My professional background is in unified communications and networking, giving me experience with codecs, optimizing audio/video, and designing efficient systems. I also run a homelab Kubernetes cluster with GitOps workflows and have solid *nix skills, which I hope will help me navigate the Volumio ecosystem.
Right now, I’m evaluating SBCs (Raspberry Pi 4B, 5B, CM4) and displays (7.9” DSI, 11.9” HDMI) as part of a project to build a streamer DAC for my dad using iancanada components. As I work through the hardware setup, I see a great opportunity for mutual benefit: I can test and provide feedback, while the community might help guide me to best practices and optimizations.
I recently shared my journey on DIY Audio while exploring options for building a streamer DAC for my dad. If you’re interested, you can check out my post here)
A few challenges have already come up—figuring out reliable compatibility between SBCs and displays, understanding Volumio’s plugin-based approach instead of manually configuring userconfig.txt, and troubleshooting device registration issues due to outbound DNS restrictions on my IoT VLAN. Additionally, I’m modifying and 3D-printing the case, which is a newer skill for me, so my responses might be delayed as I juggle everything.
Lastly, if validation using Azure’s tooling is of interest to the community, I do have access to monthly Azure credits that could be leveraged for various applications—whether IaaS (blob storage, CDN, ACS, VMs) or even PaaS experiments like Volumio as a service, Azure AI, etc.
Looking forward to learning from all of you, sharing findings, and hopefully contributing to Volumio’s growth, especially on Bookworm! Let’s make high-quality streaming even better.
